Thats what the actual question is. If the trackback link is a spam (means it is not related to my content), should I leave it there or delete it?

According to this site http://www.chrisg.com/what-are-trackbacks-and-how-do-i-use-them/ it is good for you somewhat. It's like a notification that someone mentioned your blog. At least that's how I understood the article.

Right, this is what I also understood. But what if the post from where the trackback is coming is nowhere related to your post's topic?

Well, then I think it's a matter of do you want your blog associated with that blog. I have links to/from my blog that have nothing to do with my type of content. Some of them surprise me quite a bit but I see no harm in them. Now, if I was to get a trackback from some blog I was against - such as a political, hate based, unfriendly or trashy blog I would remove it. I wouldn't want any traffic coming from there. Of course, that is all personal opinion type stuff.

As far as benefits, I don't really see any from having a link on your website to someone elses content. Now the link they put about your website on theirs would be beneficial to you. Once again though, you might not want it. In that case, write to them or contact them in some way and ask them to remove it. Trackbacks aren't valuable enough to sacrifice your reputation over.

Animesh, Trackbacks help people know about the post being linked on some other blog. So once a viewer reads your blog and scrolls down to see that your post is also mentioned somewhere else, he may or may not want to go there and read it.

Ideally, you should accept track backs when your blog post has been mentioned genuinely on another blog. If so, its like you are giving back a link to that post in harmony.

If a trackback is like this -

Nice post. You can see my post at The Nikiller ( link )

Then you should for sure delete it..

But if it is valuable comment like thishis

Your writing style is awesome! I could totally relate to the part where you said that this & that & this & that. Even I do thios stuff at home. I had also written a stuff like this, here - The Nikiler (LINK)

Then you should keep the comment.

I agree with Indianomics, daily I get more than 200 spam trackbacks and comments and Akismet helps me getting rid of them. Since you are also on WP do get akismet, its free as well. Also GASP is another good plugin which will inlcude a chekc box as mandatory to be checked below each comment form.

These spam comments and trackbacks originates from SEO backlink buster programs helping someone else to build backlinks. If you let one go through hundreds would start attacking you for next few days.

Let me know animesh if you need further info on this.

Thanks Basu. I have actually realized that. Allowed few of them in the beginning and got a lot of spam. Now when I am using Akismet, I am felling better.
