[Re-edit] Issues before moving from WP to Blogger
Yeah I read those guides n shit. Didn't make sense. Apparently backing up content from FTP and SQL is required for complete backup. But how do you guys do it? Especially those who fill up content on a regular basis? A lot of people say moving to self-hosted WP and all that but nobody talks about backup-restore. You guys are backing up self-hosted WP (right?). I am looking for easy backup-restore solution. I have a spare 1TB hard drive and few other storage devices. Is there anything like this??
Reason: grrrrrr
Go to Plugins --> Add New --> Search
Search for "backup". You can use "Wordpress Importer"
I use EZ Backup plugin.. its nice and easy... you can take the back up in ur own server at a different location, or can email urself the backup files and store it there.
If you're using cpanel, then there is a backup option, choose it and a full backup, or partial backup is created on your server itself. A link is mailed to you, in case you wish to download it your personal computer.
To restore partial backup is simple, guidelines are specified for a full backup restore. Further if you simply wanna move blog posts, wordpress import and export tools in wordpress are quite useful for almost all kind of platforms, and then there is redirect, pretty much solves rest of the glitch.
Your webhost must provide with an option of automated backups however it might cost extra.
yeah, host gator has it. But according to a friend that since for starters I am going for shared hosting, weekly upload might take its toll.
so basically if I do backup from SQLadmin, that pretty much backs up EVERYTHING right? Or do I still need to copy the data via FTP to backup themes and plugins (and comments) as well? I guess this is why intense debate/fyre/disqus is used. comments are hosted and you can always sync with wordpress/blogger's default comment and sync while still keep it hidden.
Harish has pretty much answered the question for CPanel users. AFAIK, most hosts would provide CPanel.
@ Sorcerer: All is backed up, no need to worry about comment as such, for it's in the database itself. Although I use disqus because it's very convenient to simply sync earlier comments to a post at all times. It is a backup for comments in itself.
Does it mean that we can back up the published material on our portable hard drive ? I am not a geek pl clarify Sorcy
Yes, Umesh. You can backup all your data
If you are on wordpress self hosted site log in to your web server via FTP and dump your entire <Siteroot>\WP-Content folder onto your local drive. This will copy all your themes and plug-ins, posts and will bring the pictures you need on your computer.
I use filezilla to FTP on to my site.
You also can automate the process by using plugins. But plugins will only store the data on to your domain hosts folders. You need to manually copy in to your local drive.
Hope this helps.
FTP backup has themes, widgets and stuff, yeah? But the data under phpadmin contains the actual content. Correct me if I am wrong here. But if cPanel has that backup tool then it backs up everything, yeah?Whoa this self hosting thing is tough. The most important stuff is the least talked about topic here if you ask me.
I use backwpup plugin.works pretty prefect
Does it backup the content files AND the theme/wiudgets and all that?
For complete WordPress blog backup you need to take only two things
1. Your wordpress SQL Database : It can be taken manually through your CPanel interface. Use PHPMyadmin. Several other database Wordpress plugins are available to automate the process. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-dbmanager/ (Iam using this plugin,).
2. wp-content folder: This folder contains your media, plugin and theme files.
oooh...when you say media you mean like photos and video files?
I installed dbmanager, but I am getting a notice "To correct this issue, move the .htaccess file from wp-content/plugins/wp-dbmanager to /home/twnet/public_html/wp-content/backup-db". So...if I do a backup I need to move these file as well yeah?
Sorry for the late reply... coming to dobmanager issue.. Just move your .htaccess file from wp-dbmanager folder to wp-content/backup-db. If you can't see the file just create a fresh blank .htaccess file under backup-db folder.
Media includes your photos and files.
Thanks man. India Broadband's forum owner let me practice self hosted WP in his thing. I've tested few codes and all so its doing nicely.
i found it!! I found a way to put interactive javascript graph on post now :D
Migrated to wordpress and used a theme. Fantastic show!! She looks gorgeous!!! :DI just need to do featured image+ recategorizing+ certain code changes but other than that its all good :D
Okay now my problem is that the images that I've had on my articles back when I was in blogger was hosted on either imageshack or imgur. For some reason, its not doing the "featured image" thing even when I am inserting it in featured image thing.
