IndiGrammarPolice or IndiGrammarian - needed?

I have recently come across many grammatical mistakes made on the forums or in the comments. In another forum, I pointed out some grammatical mistakes and people felt a need of IndiGrammerPolice.

I noticed there is another forum on this grammar issue as well, however that seems to have died of inattention.

I want to start this thread to discuss the need of it and the ways to avoid such mistakes.

Any suggestions?

I always like to read things that do have even a single trace of those grammatical mistakes though I myself do commit a lot of them. However, I feel that one can sacrifice grammar at times to produce a result which looks more aesthetic even after violating those rules, which I do at some times or atleast say so to cover up my mistakes. Sealed

Just wanted to share this article that justifiues even the emerging grammar on facebook: http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/open-page/article3315382.ece

A really interesting read Ranjith! thanks for Sharing this link.

I have always personally believed that The Hindu is the best newspaper in our country today with regards to the English it uses for daily publication... something that my seniors/ teachers during school told me.. I dont know if that is still true as I do not have access to it these days...

I stopped TOI and now read The Hindu

I have started reading The Hindu when I was in my eighth or ninth standard and I hope that I would be reading it for the rest of my life. People think that I am crazy when I hold the newspaper in my hand for two hours daily when the world is supposed to read such things on the net or atlaest read another paper like the TOI which is said to be interesting unlike the Hindu.

Just went through this article Ranjith...and came this thought that If indiblogger gets an IndiPolice, how much entries and things will you correct. Inspite of getting a new post for IndiPolice, we(English mistakers) should get an English Teacher....That will be the only way to solve the problem...I am looking for one Undecided..Rest is on others who realise the need.... Wink

A dictionary is defined as:- "A way for communicating your thoughts".

If I simply say "Awesome IndiBlogger is", or gramatically correct, "IndiBlogger is Awesome!". There is not much difference. Cause you understood the meaning, and it serves the person for communicating one's thought.

This is what my opinion is. Smile

In the first line, I meant a dictionary defines LANGUAGE as....

Suggestion is to allow editing posts. Obviously no one is going to write forum posts in MS Word, review it and post here. If you casually write you will make mistakes and mistakes will remain if you are not allowed to edit it. When nothing can be done if you point out the mistake, you will become unpopular.

Yeah.. Editing forum post is a good suggestion. For mistakes like I just did above. Tongue out

In my opinion, editing should not be allowed. One can change the entire reply altogether if it is allowed in which case other replies/discussions may become irrelevant.

Also, as Fool pointed out, its a casual forum and I don't see any need to be so strict here. Mostly, when we type we dont care much and it adds to the fun. Obviously, this is not something to be done on a blog. One should always check for mistakes before pressing the publish button.

Second, third and fourth @animesh here.

laloo ji was in a party of highly etiquette gentle men, he tried his best to get rosogolla on to the spoon from plate, but the race was on. Rosoogolla running for life in circles. Lastly laloo ji threw the spoon and said, aab bola sasur ke naati, humani ke maugaa samajhlis kaa, and grabbed the bechaara champ in on go and gulped it into the stomach in one piece. And said jetana daude ke baa, andar daud laggaab.

Translating it: -

laloo ji was in a party of highly etiquette gentle men, he tried his best to get rosogolla on to the spoon from plate, but the race was on. Rosoogolla running for life in circles. Lastly laloo ji threw the spoon and said, "Now tell me you *******, You thought I'm an eunuch?", and grabbed the champ in on go and gulped it into the stomach in one piece. And said, "Now run roll my stomach as much as you want"

Haha.. That is funny! Laughing

But how is that related to the forum topic?Undecided

lol Pramod!!

@Ani, thanks for the translation :)

thanks captain,for the clarification.

ritvik, it relates to the only thing that different  people have different  reasons for joining forum. some enjoy chats, some for guidance, some for blog enhancements.some for friends, and etc.etc. endless reasons.one of them is relxed enjoyment, negligible policing, irrespective of grammer restrictions.

now one can freely have rescrictions at his own blog. but in public forum one has to be liberal devoid of teachers of highschool days.

oooo... Now it makes complete sense! Smile

Someone helping with Grammar mistakes are welcome for sure! and we at the forum use so much of the IndiWords.. IndiGrammarPolice was just one of them... :) and seriously, it was for fun that I came up with it... Tongue out

I would welcome anyone suggesting grammar corrections coz it may help personally everywhere else but not at IndiBlogger. coz here is one place where I can be myself. make as many mistakes I want but I am absolutely sure that I will be understood... I am sure I am not very pathetic at it, else I would be ignored.

No to grammar/spelling ****s. Even if there's a typo by mistake I am sure people don't need a translator to figure it out. Ofcourse, sms lingo is usually frowned upon in forums generally and discouraged.

NA-ZI!! No profanity, no h00ts. Why is that word banned? :O

we always hhave the option, read this as that and that as this. I saw a hotel ad in singapore, which stated "tired of all cleanliness, come here and freely loiter any way you like. The bliss is divine in freeeeeedommaa. Got itttt dear s

I guess, a reply from me is warranted here since it was me who started all this IndiGrammarPolice thing in the ping thread. Innocent Quoting what I had said there after Diwakar pointed out some of the mistakes made in that thread,

Superb Diwakar! We do need a Grammar police in the forum, its been such a long time since someone pointed out our mistakes here. We all appreciate your gesture and are very willing to learn and correct ourselves.. and would really love to see you wielding your grammar baton around on us in future too. Smile

...Of course, after this reply of mine! Tongue out

For the first time ever since I have been in the forum, I missed an edit button for the replies. I was wrong when I used the word 'WE'.. my bad Embarassed Its an open forum... and everyone has their own views. Should have been 'I', since they are my views entirely.

Just adding something more,

Of course, I agree that as true bloggers we have all the right in the world to be our own self and express ourselves in a way/language we sense right and there can be no better place than this forum itself to substantiate this statement. Yet, I believe... healthy criticism can always make us better... (or worse), and should be respected and encouraged...

Personally speaking, I really don't have a problem if someone points out my grammatical mistakes in my forum replies or my blog posts... because a grammatical mistake is something that one generally remains ignorant about unless pointed out by someone else (which is not the case with typos)..... I guess, at the end of the day, the most important thing is that what we are making of it and each blogger has a different way of looking at things..

Arti, agree with you on this. I don't mind if my mistakes are pointed out (in a consytuctive way) but it is different than being policed. I would not like to be policed, at least in this department

Thanks Arti for dropping in here and providing your take on this. There are a few things I would like to point out:

  1. A typo and a grammatical mistake are two different things. Please don't get confused.
  2. I read the article of The Hindu whose link was provided by Ranjith. The article talks about the changing trends on how a word is spelled. English has widely been in controversy for not spelling the words as they are pronounced. Again, this behaviour is entirely different from committing a grammatical mistake.
  3. Quoting Ranjith in I feel that one can sacrifice grammar at times to produce a result which looks more aesthetic even after violating those rules, which I do at some times or atleast say so to cover up my mistakes. - I would like to see some examples on this. Ranjith - would you mind sharing a few links to your blog where you have sacrificed grammar to produce better results?
  4. Grammar has always been debated as a useless subject to study. People argue - if you understand what I am trying to say, the language serves its purpose and grammar can be obviated. To deflate this notion, I would like to draw my friends' attention to the very reason grammar came to existence.
  5. Ritvik - Tell me truthfully, have you ever used such sentence as 'Awesome Indiblogger is' or any sentence of this kind?

Folks - There is no one who is stopping you from being 'you'. You've got to be what you are. Express yourself freely. However, you use sentences like: came this thought instead of came up with this thought, there are some people who will now understand what you wanted to say and this way, you make the language futile.

Hope you understand my point.

Spelling error: In the second-last sentence, I meant to use not instead of now

I haven't. But that's not the point. The point is, that with or without grammer, I am able to convey my thoughts and views.

It would be a difficult thing to hunt out for such things. But the sacrifice I referred to is simple rearranging of words ( not placing the verb, adjective, preposition and other elements in the correct order ) which is more acceptable in poetry than in prose, which I do use on my blog on very few occassions. I am not sure if it is incorrect grammar or not but I always assumed it to be incorrect for I liked the thought of violating the rules of Grammar to develop a style of my own having a beauty quite distinct from what others possess. With a hope that I would be successful in this endeavour, I promise to share some of those instances when they crop up in the future.

Coming to the article, I have read it a few months ago and just thought that it might have some relavance here. Honestly speaking, I remember the contents of that article only partly. I should have read it a second time before sharing the link here.

These days, I find myself proofreading my reply a couple of times before hitting the reply button. ;-)

Ranjith - Please do not confuse poetry as violation of grammatical rules. Poetry never violates the rules. It has its own set of devices which are used to make it separate from prose. I wanted to point out the mistakes people make while writing prose, not poetry.

Ranjith

What about using poetic devices in prose like the one I've mentioned ? Is it correct grammar?
