i am thinking of a career change
umm okay i feel i must have not posted this here, but i did it here for two reasons1. other social networks have my relatives in there& 2. all my friends are of roughly my age so can't expect a good advice
so, the thing is i am pursuing b.tech in a moderate college in delhi and has completed a year there. the problem is, i feel i must be not in science but arts rather. i think i must specialize in a section of art. everytime i read something great, i get inspired and feel like writing similar, but then lack of good vocab! and all. i see a cartoon, i can imitate it (and it comes quite right) but making something my own. i cannot and feel must have some education in it. same if i see some theatre/movie, or listen songs or something.( though my main inclination is towards literature )
but then i also feel if i take up something else, i'll feel i like working with gears and all so shoul try engineering.i mean am a lot confused, and a wrong decission you know could be fatalp.s. avoid commenting follow your passion and all, i don't even know what my passion is. but you can surely leave a no. of a doctor/counsel (an affordable/cheap one)
Not the kind of post I expected to see on Indiblogger forum. Anyway.
First of all, you haven't started as yet. You are still studying and far from earning the first penny. So, it is not exactly a change of career, but where you possibly like to see yourself and make a career. Good part is, age is on your side and you are just doing your UG. If you start preparing for a PG program aligned with your inclination areas, you will have fair idea of where you stand and how sustainable is your liking / passion. Some good PG programs are:
Design / Creative Arts
1) PG Diploma in Design (Automobile, ceramic, toy etc.) from NID, Ahmedabad / Gandhinagar
2) PG Diploma in Design from IIT Kanpur / Bombay / Delhi (selected through CEED Exam)
3) PG Diploma in Design from Srishti School of Design, Bangalore
4) PG Diploma in Design from MIT, Pune
If you want to do a writing oriented course, try creative writing in english program from the British Council Library, New Delhi.
Literature and Languages
Masters degree from JNU / Delhi University / Jamia.
Theater / Media
1) Mass Comm from Jamia
2) Similar program from IIMC, JNU
3) Workshops at NSD, Mandi House
All of these are the best of the best. There will be some private colleges etc., but my suggestion would be no compromise. They all require a lot of hardwork and preparation to crack, and you will be competing with students who have studied all these as their core subjects. So, only your sustained passion can take you through.
Finally, my advice would be to finish engineering first with full focus and not just doing the motions. You never know, you get a good campus placements and all you see is dreams of making a career in some MNC.
Trust me, I have been through the same scenario as you have described, just that I wasn't keen on literature, but subjects like Law and political science. I ended up being an MBA :(
Hope this helps,
well i said why i posted it here.....!!but yeah! the only feasible option to me now seems is to complete my b.tech and try my hand at other stuffs just as extra-curricular activities
I always used to feel such confusions. I was impatient and if I couldn't do anything perfectly in first attempt, I used to feel, I can't do it. So, I realized, I need to improve patience, all the people who are successful in their fields, have done lot of hard work to reach the perfection with dedication and patience, so I shouldn't be so much disappointed by myself. , and I had to work only to improve my patience, you can understand the contradiction.
And I know one writer from Pune, by her book on Body Lang. I don't know her personally, but I feel she might be right person to discuss this confusion with. Add me to your network.
I forgot to write her name, Anjali Pendse. I will send you her contact by mail.
All you guys should check out this website
I read a book by this guy last week and found it very inspiring. And I assure you I am not easily inspired.
Seth gdin's "The Dip"- i have that book, never crossed the 4th or 5th page...going to start :)
@Deepak - Most of his books are advice for companies. But I read a book called Lynchpin which is an advise for individuals. And he claims that most of his advice he gives free on his website as well.
Yatin, I'm an Electrical Engineer by education and a Banker by Profession. So it is not actually certain that you will end up working in a purely mechanical profile. Even if you end up in IT sector, it is nothing related to your current trade. B Tech has drastically declined to "just another degree" level. So let that not be an obstacle in your path. If you find literature or art interesting and think that you have a calling towards that, then stop not. Go ahead and chase your dreams. Don't think that a degree in this stream alone can polish your skills. Try to get motivated from things around you. You might find inspiration from the little things and you might draw your first original sketch even! Try to travel a lot. that usually works for me. You can always reach me any time. I'll be there to lend you a hand as an elder brother. Cheers!!!
yup i too travel a lot.........actually dad takes off for a vacation every year or two......and asks me to write about it. i thus have hardcopys of several of my trips. well, yes education tooo sometimes ruin things.........and i am looking tto continue here in b.tech only.....let's see if that works out
Hey Mr.Mech(i guess so) Might be Mr.Automobile...Chill, these things will happen, am no great philosopher neither an excellent engineer to advice you, i finished my engineering this year and i struggled a lot to do that, i felt i was good at arts and humanities(like you) i realized it very later.Don't ask too much of opinions, you will blame us if it doesn't click, when you step in to something by your whole hearted decision, you will have the feel of doing things which you feel good to your heart...You have completed a year /.?You have any problem with academics like too much of arrears??i cant barely give you an idea without knowing what is what...
Don't follow anyone's idea, you can seek comfort but don't seek an Idea here...I guess i am there in your FB friend list, ping me :)Ready to shower you my experience...
no ... !! my first sem got me in the top 4 of the mechanical batch (with aroundd 79.8333333 %) (and also, feels will get around two backs this sem)......but yeah let's talk over facebook then :)
