Update: 12 APR 2014

Happy News! Smile

Baby Drushti has been discharged, and is slowly recovering from the operation. Just got the news from Hardik. They are still in Banglore, and baby is under observation on how she is recovering and coping with an environment outside of hospital.

Every morning at 6.30, the baby has to get check up done for Blood pressure and other health parameters to ascertain her recovery. But this is a great improvement in her health.

Thank you every one who provided their support for this cause. I would personally like to thank one each you and everyone who helped financially and with their prayers on Hardik's behalf.

Update: 30 MAR 2014:

  • Baby Drushti has been moved from ICCU to General Ward. Smile
  • The Operation was successful.
  • She is facing breathing difficulties and is being treated.
  • Donor (baby's father) is also doing better.

Apologies everyone, I got this update only day before yesterday, and could not find time to update the thread. I spoke to Hardik today. Since he was my point of contact and was also the donor, he was treated as well and communication was cut off. I had tried calling Hardik day before yesterday, however he was busy with the movement and called me back today.

Thank you everyone for their Support and prayers.

Update 04 FEB 2014:

  • Hospital has received the amount it needs for the operation! Thank you very much everyone. (INR 15 Lakhs)
  • Those who have added Hardik's bank account into their NEFT beneficiary list, I would request you to share your contribution that could help him cover his and his wife's other expenses during his 3 month stay at the hospital.
  • Those who have not already added him as a beneficiary, you can stop doing it now. If there is any further need, I would come to this thread and request you all. Make sure you have signed up for updates (click Track this topic on the right of your screen) so whenever need arises, your contribution could help.
  • Hardik and his family with Baby Dhrusti are flying to Banglore today and would need all your prayers in the comming weeks.

Update: 03 FEB 2013

Thank you very much SanGee! I would always remember this deed of yours. You are an inspration!

Thank you very much everyone else, who in their own way contributed to Baby Dhrusthi's cause. Your contribution will be remembered, and thanked always.

A friend of mine (Hardik Nagda) is currently facing a crisis in his family with his 5 months old daughter being diagnosed with Biliary Atresia with liver cirrhosis and is looking for Financial assistance to support the medical expenses.

Biliary atresia, also known as "extrahepatic ductopenia" and "progressive obliterative cholangiopathy" is a congenital or acquired disease of the liver and one of the principal forms of chronic rejection of a transplanted liver allograft. As a birth defect in newborn infants, it has an occurrence of 1/10,000 to 1/15,000 cases in live births in the United States. In the congenital form, the common bile duct between the liver and the small intestineis blocked or absent. The acquired type most often occurs in the setting of autoimmune disease, and is one of the principal forms of chronic rejection of a transplanted liver allograft. (Source: Wikipedia)

Baby Drushti Nagda, has been suffering from Biliary Atresia with liver cirrhosis. She was admitted to Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai when she was just two months old & underwent a major operation called Kasai Surgery. Unfortunately, the surgery did not help and was termed a failure.

Now the baby has last stage liver disease with other complications like ascites (free fluid in stomach), Blood Flow in portal vein is reversed, Persistent Jaundice, Hernia etc. The only hope for her now is to get a Liver transplantation.

My friend Hardik Nagda has been successfully screened to be valid liver donor for Baby Drushti which is by far, the best news for his family in recent times. The plan is to undergo the transplant procedure at the Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bengaluru between 15-20 Feb 2014 .

The total cost of operation would be around INR 15 Lakhs, which includes the cost for "Donor" and "Receiver" surgery. Additionally, there would be an estimated post surgery hospitalization costs are estimated at a further INR 3-4 Lakhs.

At present, he was able to manage around 2 lakhs from friends and other family members however he still needs INR 17  Lakhs more. Hardik is the only breadwinner for the family, and Baby Drushti's previous hospitalization and surgery has already exhausted his financial resources. He is in desperate need of help.

And any contribution towards this cause would be heartily appreciated. Be it INR 100, 500, 1000 or more. Please do help Baby Drushti.

As per estimation letter, donations can be collected by hospital directly. If anyone is willing to send contributions directly to the Hospital, please make Cheque in favor of Narayan Hrudayalaya, Bangalore.

Please mention Patient ID (Pt.ID: 10020000656724 Baby Drushti Nagda) on back of the Cheque/DD.

Hi Kushboo,

Thank you very much for bringing this thread up. I have been busy myself, however I have an update and this has been put up above. Baby is doing well, she is still having difficulty breathing however has been moved to General Ward where she is currently being treated further.

Hi Rio,

Sure it is positive. Only bit was I was disconnected coz my contact was with Hardik and did not have his wife's number with me. Since he also underwent surgery (being the donor) I waited to hear the news through other channels. I got an update day before yesterday, and only today got to speak to Hardik.

Kudos to you for championing the cause Hemal, otherwise it's become a busy world these days, truly... a friend in need is a friend indeed. I read through the entire post and I was so touched. I could not even properly pronounce the names of the medical terms you listed here. I will keep the little angel in my prayers. I hope she gets well really really soon.

It was a collective effort, Hemal. The entire community is responsible for the help, including the IndiAdmins.

Kudos to the collective effort and the helping hand extended by bloggers to help in their own ways. This proves that our community is a live one with real bloggers engaged and not any bots.Tongue out

A lot of people shared this with many others and many anon people contributed. The advert publised in MidDay Mumbai brought in 8 lakhs in a single day. Other contributions continued in their own small way.

6 days back, he had only managed to arrange 2 lakhs towards the operation expenses, and in 6 days and prayers and contribution of many helped reach the 15 lakhs mark. Every IndiBlogger should be proud about such a lovely and inspring community.

true, hemal, a community we can be proud of being associated with. A place where we are heard and we can count upon in times of distress.

Thank you very very much Bhavya! Have baby dhrushti in your prayers. I have updated this thread with more information. As of now, the hospital has received its funds for operations and now the only contribution could be sent to Hardik's NEFT account. I am only requesting those who have alreayd initiated the NEFT process to continue with the transaction, others who are yet to add Hardik as a beneficiary, can hold on. If need be, I would come here on this thread and update the thread and at that time, if you could please do contribute.

Hi Amanda, thank you very very much for your help. Completely agree with your statement, no baby should go without surgery because of lack of funds!

As of now, we have met the target for the operation, and hence request you to stop the sharing bit, and inform on the share post that the new donations can stop for now. If need be, I would be updating this page and then I would seek all your help that we could.

Thank you very much Rachna! God bless you... Please watch this page for updates. Since you have already initiated the NEFT addition, please proceed with your contribution. As of now, you can hold on sharing this with your network of friends - we already have received the operation cost and only requesting people who have already initiated NEFT process to go ahead.

It is really sad to see someone esp a baby in such a situation. Whatever is the God's way, I am sure God will provide relief too.

Hemal and baby my prayers are with you. I will try to do my bit as much possible. Hope for the speedy recovery of the child!

Meanwhile, with your due permission I would like to spread the word around too. I remember certain friends of mine, have supported their friend from Britannia for his treatment some years back. Lets see if we can start a foundation like that. My prayers are with the ailing baby and her parents.

Hemal Shah
from Mumbai

Thank you very very much Ekta! Everyone here and outside of IndiBlogger who is praying and contributing in their own way are the mediums through which God is provding the relief. The family would still be bearing the pain and god would, thru doctors provide them the medicine. We all hope the baby recovers as soon.

As I shared with others and updated the topic thread as well, you can wait for any further instructions via this thread to spread the word. The hospital has now received 15 Laks needed for the operation and anyone who has already initiated the NEFT to Hardik's account can continue with the process.

About the foundation, there are a lot of NGOs that are into this already. One of the reasons I personally do not appreciate these NGOs is because of the some hygine factors.

  • There do not respect the privacy of the donor. Some folks from these NGOs share telephone numbers and other details with other NGOs and they call them up for funds and donations. In a day on an average, I receive 2 calls for donations from various NGOs. With all that intention they have, these could really hurt individual donors. They cant say not, but due to their own financial condition they have to. And I feel worse when I have to turn someone down who needs help, every day. You can read about such frustrations even on my Facebook where I am loud enough to express my utter dissatisfaction of why I shared my number with one NGO which leaked it and spread it all over.
  • These NGOs have their own expenses to cover and some times, they lack transperency. Well that could be said about individuals as well, but honestly, Individuals are better trusted than NGOs some times. I may have a wrong perception and would be happy to be corrected in this aspect.
  • There is a question of authenticity. In their cases, the NGO receives the funds and what happens afterwards is a mystery. Its all trust based. In this case, there are options that are provided - like contribute to the Hospital directly or to the father of the child. So if you are suggesting that a Foundation be started, the first thing I could recommend is to not receive funds and connect the donor with the child/patient and ask them to contribute in which ever way they can.

Hi Indianomics,

That indeed is a great news. God is Great!

I was just discussing with my family if I too can ask Renie to convert my prize in cash, so that I and donate a portion of it here and little to Milaap foundation and others. They heartily reciprocated and told me to also try the NGO way if possible. I opened this page to explain the situation and was soooo glad to see that the baby has already received the amount for her surgery! God bless! I just hope she beats her age in terms of faster recivery and recover soon and well.

I have written to few people yesterday who knew a lot of NGOs in person and had network with Narayana Hrydyalaya as well. I hope they too help. I was not aware about your personal experience with NGOs but yes, I do agree with you. I too had a similar situation which thankfully has been stopped now.

Few months back I used to get lot many such calls from many NGO incl CRY for donation and I use to feel it very bad given that my resources are limited and I was unable to help everyone. Leave alone NGO, when sudden relatives of mine [who did though in good faith] in USA when asked other relatives to give money for my leg, I felt offended and sad about my earnings. Recently, a cousin sister who came to India too offered to write me a cheque for some money, I refused that even though I needed the money but I felt too bad taking from her and refused.  I can very well understand how someone feels bad. Donations should be anonymous.

  • NGOs do lack transparency and I agree with you. I have certain friends who have their friends in some NGOs and they earn more than lakh every month for their salaries, while still asking people to donate.
  • Authenticity can be an issue as well. But do RTI covers such NGOs?
  • I am sure there will be good NGOs as well. However Govt too provides certain reliefs here but I wonder if it actually reach needy people and how.

I am indeed happy to know that your friend managed to collect the funds for baby's operations in such a short span. Hats off to you too for helping him. Friends like u r indeed precious.

waiting to hear good news from you..Hope the child goes in flight but comes back in train, sitting near window seat, enjoying the beautiful landscapes outside that nature created, giggling, celebrating her happy recovery. Take care. Be good!

As I already said above, thank you once again! It is really encouraging that you reached out to your neighbours and were able to collect some funds. With whateever you have collected till now, if you can initiate the NEFT that is okay - otherwise, you can request to hold it for now and if there is a need, we can continue to receive more funds. Those who have already initiated NEFT, I would request them to continue and proceed with the transaction.

As of now, we can stop spreading the word as one of the main target is already being met - the hospital getting funds for the operation. If needed, I would update this topic and will look forward for all the beautiful people here at IndiBlogger continue providing any support and prayers.
