Why We read History ?
Because History repeates itself? In which case, does the repetition, also repeat? This could get complex! 
Because we have to pass the examinations.. 
History is read to Destroy or History can be read to avoid the mistakes of past.
Necessity of studying rises from our need to predict outcomes, one of basic needs of Survival. We observe, accumulate and study raw data of recent and past activities, events and their out comes to draw patterns of outcome, so that we can be better prepared. History is nothing but better documenatation of that raw data. But this documenation is often biased and noted by the gainers of the outcome, which is why we keep repeating the mistakes. So if this information is chroniciled by somewhat unbiased medium then we can better utilize history.
Because it's interesting to see all the mistakes people made and then watch them spend the next 5o years trying to do one of the following
1. try to fix it
2. try to hide it
3. acknowlege, apologise and pay off people :)

Knowing one's own past can create a sense of pride in us. That is why it is important to know history as accurately as possible.
We read history in school that was written mostly by Western people. Many of this stuff is biased towards the west, and hence the need to re-think and re-assess things.
It is said that "History is written by the winner". You know who were the winners of the world in the last 500 years. The story before 500 years is entirely different - One that we all should know cleary. One that can restore pride in our people's minds.
