Indivine Categories- Suggestions Invited!
Of late, there have been many requests for addition of new categories and subcategories in IndiVine and this thread focuses mainly on that. Below are some of the ones I can think of right now that have been pending for long! (Appreciate any suggestions on these as well):
- (New category) Literature/Creative Writing --> (Subcategories) Satire, Fiction, Poetry, Spoofs...
- (New) Reviews --> Tech, products, movies, books...
- (New) SEO and Promotion --> Contests, Giveaways, Traffic generation tips and tricks...
- Festivals/Culture (Subcategory under Lifestyle)
We have a Google Spreadsheet Category Layout (Thanks to Hemal Shah) which will be updated periodically depending on the suggestions received and the ensuing discussions.
Contribute freely if you feel there’s need for any additions/changes in the present categorization module of the system (If you have already done so before, rqst you to please do so once again in this thread for ease). While voicing out your opinions, it would be appreciated if you could check out the existing structure of IndiVine and give a thought on where and how your proposed idea is fitting in, in the current structure itself coz at the end of the day we dont want to see Indivine turning into a mess!
So, go ahead.. give your category/subcategory suggestions, and also participate in discussions… lets all help the IndiTeam make Indivine a better place for all of us

Arti, I'd like to make a notion that allow one Indivine post under two categories. Suppose I use one of your travel photographs to write a poem, I'd love it if it can be put under both "Photography" and "Poetry", since the post gets complete only with both aspects, doesn't it?
Yes Leo, a very good point suggested there. Another way to this cud be by utilizing the tag feature. Like take the example you gave, the post can be put in one of the poetry or photography section as best suited and can be tagged as the other.
As of now, however, this tag feature has no meaning and is a huge waste. We need a dedicated tag cloud search In IndiVine. If put to good use, i feel it can solve a lot of these categorization issues and can help in the betterment of the post classification structure...

Yes, this - adding a tag cloud search in Indivine- needs to be done on an urgent basis.
My take is that one should have user experience on new products or service, this is where bloggers will log in their genuine user experience. It will be useful for corporates to have a look at the feedback on their offerings to consumers. So sub category BRANDS under BUSINESS. LAUNCH NEWS by Corporates another sub category can be added under Business.
A seperate section for reviews is already being talked about. I think that will handle a lot of things you have pointed Umeshji...
Umesh, I think we already have broader categories here. For Brands which is effectively a Marketing and Advertising actvity, we already have a category.
Again, something where tags can come in handy to group all similar type of poems and prose under a single tag cloud.. I can think of this as an alternative solution to instead of creating a seperate category for poetry altogether and then creating subcategories under it.

There is already a category called Love & Relationships and which achieves this purpose.

how about naming it IndiPraise? 
We will leave the title name open for discussion... IndiPraise is good too but I think IndiPosts would be a better option because the title should be self-explanatory for clarity even to the newbies...
IndiPosts can be confused with forum posts as well, and hence my suggestion. If you feel it does not fit in there, we can go ahead with IndiPosts as well...
Facts can be represented in their respective sections as well Geeta apart from the GK section..
@Geets I checked out, Youth and education is quite an ok category for your topic and you can also consider putting them under wildlife
Strret photography.. by itself is a very important genre different from the other schools of photography.,,a suggestion from the barefeet blogger of mumbai....and of course hijras might have to end up as a self improvement here at Indi Blogger
Anything and everything in Photography has one category Firoze, and I think all kind of Photography fits in here nicely.
We immediately need a non-sense category.for abstract non-sense.

Wierd/NonSense makes perfect sense to me! 
Please add few more sub catogories like 'Thoughs' , ' immaginations' ' Experiences' 'Philosaphy' etc under the category ' Offbeat & Personal' . The given sub Categories are not enough to contain all the posts coming under 'Off beat and personal'. So they tend to be either 'mis-categorised' or misplaced . Please consider, and also a fecility to edit the (wrongly ) added category would be appecaitable. ( Is this posted in the right catogory ?)

I think the sub categories you mentioned can be achieved using the stories section. if they are not stories, we have other categories where they would fit in. Blogging is all about Thoughts and Imaginations, our day to day Experiences with these is what we blog about. And for each thought we have some or other category.
@Rajeevan In case of experiences, thoughts and imaginations.. it has to have a theme. Like, for eg. What kind of experience you have had, related to personal life, travel, etc? They can then be categorized acc. as @indi has said above, we do have a wide variety categories and subcats where these cud fit in.
We would appreacite if you could clarify further as to what is the exact problem you are facing right now with posting in IndiVine, with an example, so that we can understand it better.
Agree with @Arti, if you would like to bring in more clarifications, please do provide us more insights.
@Arti thanks, I missed out saying that.
More or less, we have an updated list which I feel can work better. If there is more, I request all of you to please contribute here. The aim also is to make as little changes as possible and keep the categories to cover as much as possible. We dont want many categories which will beat the purpose. More categories, more confusion for user as well as the person who is posting it, also can lead to more mistaken postings in wrong categories.

Hi, I am a personal finance blogger. I write about getting ahead financially. Ther's no category as such here. Like to know your opinion about it.
@SBasu you already have a dedicated category. Please feel free to look around the available categories before you submit so that you dont submit your post in a wrong category.

I think travel is missing or is it clubbed with Family and parenting travel , under main catergory of Lifestyle.

Yes, I too would suggest Travel being a separate category.. No idea why it came under 'Lifestyle' 
Travel sub category gets more post than two Main categories , Science and Sports . So don't it deserve a separate category-ship ? I think photography should also be a separate category , since it would be one among the largest Sub categories . I still don't know why do you want to add a separate review category , when these already there in different categories , eg.. Books and Movies already there under Entertainment .

@Dhiraj, Santosh: Yes, even I was thinking that travel cud have a seperate category. But what could be the subcategories? (Any suggestions there) and I was just a bit confused on whether it could lead to confusion which we really dont want.. Same applies to photography as well.

Sorry i couldn't read the comments so replying on the basis of post only, but i think News Satire is a subcategory we need in offbeat or it can be a part of creative write ups as well
Sub categories under travel - Pilgrimage , Trek , Wild life/Nature , Historical , Architectural, International , Back packing , Road trips, etc .
Sub categories under Photography - Sky watch , Mono chrome , Macros , Portrait , Landscapes , Photography tips , Abstract , Wildlife/ Nature , General , etc .
Thanks a lot Dhiraj, definitely worth considering in my opinion and very valid too. This will ensure better structure and classification and will help the readers too in deciding for what they want to read. I will see, if I can or club some or add some more to the list provided by you.
What do the others say? I like the idea and it has a +1 from my side.
I see no categorry for pets. Under personal/off beat there is nothing for pets.

there should be sub-categories for that too.....
