Does your family read your blog?

A lot of us do keep talking about friends reading our blogs, but what about family? Do they read your blog? Does that bother you or do you find it encouraging? What do they make of your entire blogging activity?

Just curious, would love to hear you out! Please share Smile

My family members do read my blog, some posts they like some they don't they are my source for good positive criticism for a post. But they always complain that I spend too much time blogging and that I shd be 'studying' which makes me angry

Wonderful, parents as a source of positive criticism goes a long way in inspiration to always put our best foot forward! Any advice they give is always for our best :)

and what about you.... do you think that you're keeping a balance between blogging and studies or not? If you honestly think 'yes' then continue along the same line by humbly dealing with them... otherwise listen to what they are telling Wink

what about family? Do they read your blog?

- No... 'hardly' to be humble Undecided

Does that bother you or do you find it encouraging?

- I'm used to it I guess and started to find it encouraging off late! Why? .... because I won't have to justify for every incident of vomiting after the party Sealed

What do they make of your entire blogging activity?

- Some drink, some drive, rest drink & drive... if few aliens are left out, they blog... after all something you need to do right? Tongue out

Well my brothers do read my blog sometimes and encourage me but greatest shock to me came when I saw a comment from my father. I had written a story about Father son relationship and he had jotted down a few kind words of encouragment on the facebook page for my block. It was a rather pleasant surprise for me beacause he is quite the strict kinds and I had never imagined he would have appreciated my spending my time writing. Still I have never discussed the incident with him Foot in mouth

That is touching. Lucky you, you have a silent admirer in none other than your father! That episode needed no discussions.. you should have just gone and given him a big jaadu ki jhappi Wink Can you share the link to that story please, would love to have a read. Smile

You know what I feel Manavendra, may be your father wanted to see your happy face seeing his comment on your page.... and by not discussing the incident with him you denied him of that pleasure Yell

I started blogging in December 2009. My parents got to know that I have a blog just 2-3 months back. Since then they come to my blog to read. Though I never asked them to read. But won't mind the other way too! Smile

That is a long time after you started that your parents got to know of it. Why didnt you tell them before? Now that they have started reading, do they comment on your writings, may be not in blog but in person or are they just reading it?

I don't know why, I just didn't told them about this.

My sister does comment, while my parents just read them, they don't comment on the blog, but do comment in person. They're encouraging in a way! Smile

My Dad reads I guess!!! He once told me that he loved the post on Jhansi Ki Rani that I had submitted for the kfc contest. I was pleasantly surprised and just sheepishly thanked him!! Never again my blog has been discussed, think he never liked any other post...

@DS Wonderful, DS! In addition to thanking him, perhaps you could have added - keep reading. May be your sheepish thanking, gave him an inkling that his reading your blog was making you conscious. Hence, your blog was never discussed again... Just a thought.

Interesting thread Arti. I started my blog to keep my mum and sister updated about my kids, so yes, they do read it. A lot of other family members read it too excpet .... The Husband. I'm not sure that's a good thing or a bad one :-). But I have to admit praise from family is a whole different thing. Despite me being a journalist, they're surprised when I come up with a specially good post each time :-I.

Thank you Arti for starting this thread. I have never thought about this, since for many years, my family were the only readers I had. There are times today when some of the things I share tend to be ground for debate among the family but I am still glad that they read. It is encouraging, of course, but I see the point about whether that would stop you from sharing some things that you might otherwise have been comfortable sharing. In my case, I believe that if there are things that I am uncomfortable sharing with my family, I would want to reexamine the basis of my relationships.

Anunoy Samanta

Well said Doc...  but I think all bloggers are not in the same stage as you're in... so accordingly some are lucky and some aren't yet Tongue out

Interesting topic Arti ... My hubby and sis read my blog ... infact if I am not sure about some story or poem I take my hubby's opinion ( its a diff thing that I do just the opposite of what he suggests ;) )

But the only thing is they don't comment on my blog ...they just tell me verbally whereas I would have loved it if they commented on my blog ...

Arti

I haven't seen many family members commenting on blogs too unless they are bloggers themselves. Wonder what keeps them away... perhaps they think their presence will spoil our blogging rhythm?

I did not really mean to get my family to my blog. But somehow my prospective bride had stumbled on my blog even before I met her for the first time. Eventually after marriage, I enlisted her to proof read most of my posts. Then my brother-in-law's then girl friend stumbled upon it and became a frequent visitor and one of the most regular people to comment. Somehow she is not so regular at my blog after her wedding though. To get readers I had synchronized to Facebook. So many of my school, college friends and current/former office colleagues would be aware of my blog. My father also came across my blog when he started his FB account and added me. He follows me rgularly and also goes around giving the link of the blog to relatives as well. My in-laws are also aware of the blog but don't frequent it.

So in short everyone knows my blog. So I need to be very careful what I write there. Definitely can't write personal experiences openly as whatever I write, definitely some characters in the story will be reading my blog. Similarly even if mustered courage I can't do strong political satire as dad will get alarmed.

Arti

Very interesting TF, guess, as our blogs start getting older... the wrappings we lay on it tend to come off.

My case is somewhat similar to yours when it comes to the distant family, of aunts and cousins. I never wanted them to read my blog. But after the Japan trip happened, most of them got to know about it. But even now, I dont think they read it... neither do they value it. It is only my immediate family that is a source of encouragement.

Anyways coming back to you, does your father also advice you on blogging related things like whether you should be doing blog reviews or not, or any such thing?

TF Carthick

@Arti - You would be surprised to know that he takes active interest in my blog. He in fact even visits even your blog and those of many other blog friends of mine. Though he never comments, he often inquires about the other bloggers and discusses blog posts with me. Of course he advices and one thing he always keeps warning me against is political satire.

Arti

Thank you very much for sharing TF. I am super delighted to know about him reading my blog. wow! You visiting my blog itself is such an honor, your father visiting is double honor. Please convey my thanks to him. Smile
