@Raisa ..@Pramod bhai is just giving an instance that its not that women are the only suffering ones...n victims..there are men also who are being victimised.. well that has a point in it..

may be who knows..in another millenia.. women will totally dominate..and then men would keep complaning about it...just imagining..the men then would read history and think...those were the golden days... am sure u wld love that to happen now itself

@ unknown bhai,.  u r right my friend,.

there is a forum in delhi of patni trasta people. u cn see ads al over ., dahej ki aad main patni sataaye to hammare paas aayen.

they want 100% rights. if they get it then demand would go 200%. .

there is no limit to their demands. man.

@raisa : i havnt read all the posts here.  But going throught some of your points you are mainly concentrating on "puranas".. come on.. is that all..

do we need to really dig around the past like this. I agree that women were under many rules(i am not telling men laughed at woman) in the past centuries. But now things have changed. Women in the current age have so much freedom and there are literally no rules to make them suffer or whatever. so the discussion is almost pointless.

Let me quote my favourite movie line here: "After CENTURIES of men looking at my tits in stead of my eyes and pinching my ass instead of shaking my hand, I now have the *DIVINE* right to stare at a man's BACKSIDE with vulgar, cheap appreciation if I want to!"

It's true! Even today commodification exists! Else the terms "item", "bomb, "maal" would not have existed! Tongue out

I need not even mention the other crap that women have to bear! (have already elaborated on that!) The list goes on!!!!

Patriarchy is something that  has been in place since the time of the ancient Greek civilization. It is not something that you can shut your eyes to. Women were counted at par with slaves andconsidered irrational. If you study religious mythology deeply, especially Hinduism and Greek mythology, you will discover a deep-rooted patriarchy that emerged over a period of time. There are layers to these texts hiding so much..Women have borne a lot and it is simply unfair to say that we have it easy. I agree the situation is better now, but it is mostly in the urban areas, look to the rural parts you will see that conditions are as bad as before. Sati still happens, so do marital rapes, forced marriages, etc...Things that are inhumane and disgusting to say the least! Sorry for flushing the humour out but some of the remarks here were a little offensive atleast to me. We don't have it easy. I live in the city of Delhi, I am a well-educated girl with very progressive parents and a great boyfriend, but society is such that there are still times when I wish I wasn't a girl. Things would have been easier. There are some freedoms that shall never be mine. Because of my gender.

Let me give a simple instance- a girl who has had a boyfriend before marriage will be tainted as a whore and men having 20-25 or even more will be the "Dabaang" dudes. i'm not talking about guy-girl talk. It's the society as a whole that considers it to be that way.

Ok I am not saynig we are living in an utopia.. I do read crime news..

so? I have read a lot of cases where women have been cruely burnt for more dowry...

and u know the funny part..a lot mother in laws also take part in this royal ritual..[read heinous crime]

now whom should we blame here???

Naveen
from Bengaluru

actually..do these things happen in real life? i have seen the mother in law - wife fights in movies, but not heard any in a real life!

Aldeena
from New Delhi

The thing is the ingraining..I would mention the burqa argument here. I have studied this particular issue in my Masters so I talk from the pulpit here! :P

Patriarchy is so deep-rooted in our minds that it is hard for us to remove it so easily. My generation has been a little immune to this I would like to believe but my mother's generation was brought up under this and conditioned to believe that all that crap is right. It is not ok for women to question things, think, fall in love and mundane things like that. Mother-in-laws come froma different background and that is the reason. They were brought up in a world that taught that all that shit is what is right. It is so deep in their minds that it is rooted in their minds.

The burqa too, it is easy to say they would not wear it if they didn't want to, but to say 'no' for a woman is not so simple. There is condemnation and ostracisation that will follow. How many women would be in a mental position or social or financial position to take that risk?

The problem thus lies in indoctrination of redundant values. The day that goes our world will be a better place..

Unknown
from Hyderabad, India

@Aldeena I should say u r smart from ur points..unlike many I read above...

but ur argument has nto answered clearly what i posed...u say mother in laws are different bckgrd..pls plss plss.. they are also women....a daughter in law becomes a mother in law...

Aldeena
from New Delhi

@Unknown: My point holds..read it again. The current crop of mother-in-laws belong to the same generation that I gave my mom as an example of.. When I become a mom-in-law, I can assure you that it won't be the same. Because my upringing is different. I have a different view of the world...

Raisa nair
from bangalore

@unknown : i told you , u have a problem u comment without reading things properly.....

And if u want me to prove my point...recently around 4 cases came up in bnaglore where husband have killed their wives , they all well educatde , even women are working ,living in nuclear family , still for some issues like money and all...thy have murdered thr own wives.....

And also to remind you that gone are those days where mother in law use to burn her daughter in laws...because hardly ul find people living n joint family these dyas...its rare...!!

Moreover...even if mother in law is coming to burn where is the husband....y cant he come and rescue her...i guess its a man's reponsibility to take care of his wife after marriage from all sorts of evil around her if he really respects her in any sense......!!!

So when u cant expct a bit of respected from literate man....thr's no use of talking about the illterate old genration people....i hope ur points against me are clear now...

Unknown
from Hyderabad, India

@ALdeena..

ok here in the whole of the thread the discussions have been about past and present.. u r talking about future.. I was pointing to the past n recent past..i am blaming those women who have harassed women..now lets ask @raisa to tell how much percentage is that figure..cos i cant dream numbers...are u reading @Raisa..

cool so according to u in another 2 generations..whole so called fairer sex will be fully emancipated.. if u go through the whole thread it has started with a skewed stance..which I was trying to argue on..

Unknown
from Hyderabad, India

@Raisa.. I did read..so I commented.. on that..its a case where a futuristic scenario is given an explanation to past problem..so I asked Aldeena about that again..

see the problem with me...is I am more intelligent..

in that cases u gave...u have told about the Mom-in-law u r telling the husband has to help..yes u r right..he has to.. then what is the mom-in-law a women? or animal? talk about her gender and her responsibility.. u see women r killin women..

Aldeena
from New Delhi

@ both..let's not fight over this..it's something that both genders need to work towards..

@ Unknown: No, I am not saying two generations further all women will be emancipated. I am not trying to give a soution here, I'm not God! You're not getting what I'm trying to say... I am talking about the reason and not the solution. The problem is the deep-rooted patriarchy that still exists. That conditioning must stop for any change to come about. And I can tell you with full proof that this conditioning is prevalent even in my generation and yours too, assuming we belong to the same. ;) There are some peers and cousins I know who think diffferently from me and are still not free from this because of their conditioning.

The sloution is something I have no clue about but yes, it will start with each individual, and it's not going to be easy. But I hope it will get solved someday... If I free my mind, I will help my kids to grow without those shackles and they in turn will help their children and friends and so on..It's a chain, until everyone joins it won't be complete.. :)

I was not talking about present and past, I was simply answering your question..

Aldeena
from New Delhi

@ Unknown: the mother-in-law is a victim of flawed beliefs..Her parents must have believed in this and so she was indoctrinated as well. As I said, it is how you are conditioned which makes you who you are...

Unknown
from Hyderabad, India

@Al deena yes u r right..if u go thru the way the disc started..it was like men and only men against women..

now we see it is humans against humans....ok i agree that women r physically weaker..so more women come under the victims.. and again this has been varyin with times.. it is defly not the case before modern social reforms

Aldeena
from New Delhi

I disagree with your argument with all due respect. It's very sexist to say women are physically weaker. it's not just women as victims..I'm not looking for a sympathy vote. But things have not changed that much..I have already defended this statement. It is only in the urban areas that you see change. Try delving into the grassroots and a different picture will emerge.. You're argument is very uppity and bourgeis for my liking..really sorry! But you're looking at the world with rose-tinted lens. i'm not talking about your immediate surroundings but about the entire country and also the world. Progress has been largely in urban areas..

I quote my prev statement:

" I agree the situation is better now, but it is mostly in the urban areas, look to the rural parts you will see that conditions are as bad as before. Sati still happens, so do marital rapes, forced marriages, etc...Things that are inhumane and disgusting to say the least! Sorry for flushing the humour out but some of the remarks here were a little offensive atleast to me. We don't have it easy. @Raisa started topic as women on whole..now cos @Aldeena says mom-in-laws are different background[with due respects to her own ideas..i dont want to comemnt on it].. now @Raisa shifts her argument towards husbands being responsible..

@Raisa defend mother-in-laws..if u have to go by ur initial argument...let me see

Aldeena
from New Delhi

This is not a blame game guys..It is something that has caused many women to live all their lives in pure hell! Our mothers and those mother-in-laws could have been victims of the same thing..Haven't you thought of that Unknown? They had mother-in-laws too.. It's all they know..Life was not such that they could have extensive knowledge. It's not about whose to blame.

i'm not defending the mother-in-laws- I must clarify. inhumane deeds I can never and never will defend. The mother-in-law who kills her son's wife for dowry is a killer. And so is the husband who stands as a spectator. Both are equally wrong. But we must rise above the blame game and look at the bigger picture. it's not who or what but why that is the root to finding soultions...

Unknown
from Hyderabad, India

yes..i agree to that...so dont discount the mom in law and say only men do it...which has been the stance..for almost last 2 hrs...so blame those human beings whose minds are screwed up...there is no diff between men n women...

@Raisa where r u..

Raisa nair
from bangalore

@unknown : Ur came here with a view of arguing ...i came to discuss...both got different meanings in case u doubt...!!!!

The whole agenda talks about enhancing women position , m still talking about the same....and please note u came up with the topic of "MOTHER IN LAW"....(please read things properly alwys, i requst u now ) , m trying to tk about present, u giving me whole past list of "MEns Contribution ".....Mother in law  is another past topic....start living in present please... :-P

And m in no interest to defend and prove u something...i speak about the truth...neither m with "KYUKI SAAS BHI KABHI BAHU THI SERIAL"......thts a flop now MR..so come out of it....U have tkd about all Off topics and nonsensicsl topics here , start tking about present world things (Request u again )....

And still to defend myself......yes its true that Women is Women's enemies.....but evrything has a reason....if u concerned about todays issues...(which i doubt )...mother is forced to kill her girl child beacuse otherwise she wont be allowed to survive, women are forcefully skd to sleep with her own father i law, they are beaten up...., they had been forced to live the life where they they are made to suffer evry moment of it.......they are askd to give prefrnce to their son insted of daugters...this is all forced on women for thr own survival...!!!

Aldeena

Raisa, I agree with your point about survival. Yes, that is the reason many a times. Very valid..
