CopyRight photographs

I take most of the photographs just out of personal interest. And as nature and people do not charge me anything, I do not think copyrighting it is desirable. So, is it necessary that we copyright photos that we put on the blog? How to ensure that they are not misused - especially photographs of persons? Pls, share your knowledge for my benefit.

Watermarking is definitely a right option , but I am not in favour of disabling right click. You can also convert your pictures into swf flash format (slideshow or something), u can then upload the flash files to ur file hosting domain (such as google pages or something) and use it in your blog. This way you can prevent the misuse of your photos as the swf file will act as a container protecting them.... Also you need to make sure that your file hosting domain have private access so that the flash files (swf) can't be downloaded. In this way neither you lose precious private info/data, nor ur readers get annoyed, nor its as unprofessional (rather it'll make you look more professional) Laughing

Thanks Anjan. I will try out swf format... Thanks.

This sure is a formula that works for many. But if you are smart enuf, you can still extract these pictures.. there are SWF extractors available in the market and you can extract anything from a SWF file, including the background music. there is no sure shot way of protecting images on your site.

I'd definitely watermark photos/digital at you post. That's what I do for all my art work. Prevents people from copying, modifying or taking credit for what's not rightfully theirs. : )

Disable right click? And what if the the one copying your photos is using a Mac? And there's more to right click disabling. Besides, the way browers work, they have to first download the picture before they can display it.

Marking it the way Parv suggested is the only easy thing you can do. Short of not putting work on the Internet, you can't stop people from saving your work and using it.

My funda with posting stuff is that if it's too precious to have it stolen, don't put it in the public domain.

Thanks Rohini. Mac? After coming to IndiBlogger I have realized that I know too little about blogging and softwares. But I think the whole idea of joining such networks is to learn from others... I will try to learn about it. Yes, you are right. If something is too precious and if I am too attached to it, not making it public is the right way.

Not bothering at all about misuse is certainly an option.

Although i don't mind the little copyright notice at the bottom of the photo. Just in case it is misused, atleast you tried to avoid it..Smile

where there is a will there is a way. People can always take a print-screen of the webpage and edit it. So there is not much one gains going through all the trouble of disabling left/right click and as Subhayan has already pointed out, it irritates the readers.

Thanks Neelima... (good to see someone spelling the name rightly... you know people generally spell it 'Nilima' ...) Yah! One of my friends found out the print-screen option. Irritating readers is not a good hospitality... I mean first invite them to read and then create hurdles...

Both options disable and watermark are good .But they are useless .

there are thousands of ways to capture the pic from web page .

if you use watermark ,you have to use it, middle of the photo ,so this way i think it does not remain a orignal photo, all beauty is gone .

I agree. The best way I believe is not to bother about misuse.... afterall we are  not blogging for monetary gains but just for sharing with friends...Smile
