Do follow blog commenting, and guest posting are really helful to build up your baclinks. But if your blog is relatively new, dont worry too much about it and try to focus more on your content, because it might as well take some time for you to increase that backlink number count.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backlink  understand what a backlink is. Be active on some good PR blogs/websites by commenting on them along with your blog link in it. There is an algorithm which Google follows to rank your site, in which backlinks or inbound links play a vital role.
