Instead of reducing scope for corruption govt is mulling to amend the motor vehicles act for hefty penalties.  The fines for traffic violation is proposed to be increased from Rs 100 to 500, Rs 1000 - Rs 5000 etc for traffic signal violation and dangerous driving.  This will give unlimited powers to Police to make money.  Wearing of seat belts and helmets seems ridiculous in city traffic which is moving at slow pace.  On speeds above 40 km it is essential.  What is the way out for the motorist and authorities.  It is obviously disciplining oneself.  Overspeeding offense install speed governors in vehicle, Drunken driving revoke license to learners, talking on cellphone seize cellphone for a week, etc.  creative solutions rather than stiff penalty, idea should be aimed at reforming rather than providing scope for cops to earn extra buck.  What do all feel guys YELL

Indian public can never be self disciplined. At least here in Ahmedabad, the traffic situation is worse. No one follows traffic signals, on every street people drive on the wrong side, there is no respect for a fellow vehicle... I am all for imposing as strict fines as possible... Atleast they will deter people from breaking the laws.

DS, strict vigil by authorities can make things smooth, whether it be any amount. larger amount will begin blackmarketing of more amount. now, these officers are never on running traffic properly. they just hunt if someone doesn't have seat belt on by mistake and swish money out of him, or the transport trucks, they see one coming and lo, the eyes start shining bright for the fix income coming.

Instead, good vigyl and effecient signal monitoring is needed. when they find a person without helmet , just see the scene. all the staff present leaves the duty of monitoring, to clinch the best possible extraction.

and the life goes on.

Sorry ,for saying they, not all of them, some, only some, which give bad name for everyone.

Road discipline will start coming Deep, dependending on the moods of the populace.  Some people reform late.  Road dividers help in disciplining the road users.  I feel majority of the road users are disciplined otherwise it would be a chaos.
