A blessing in disguise for childless couple ! Blockbuster for the medical fraternity involved !  Money spinning arrangement for agents and legal advisors.  The statistics of 10% of the couple are issueless in the country, which means at least a target segment of 1 crore.  It obviously means moolahs in plenty.  All infertility treatments have no guarantee of procreation despite expensive procedures.  The inter mediaries will decide whose genes are compatible to procreate.  It would be fantastic story material for an ethical oriented author who is critical about medical fraternity.  A la Robin Cook Coma material, anyone interested in debating this controversial topic  : Issues that needs pondering are :

1) Choice of sex of the child is possible

2) Commercialisation of Womb, leading to multiple surrogacy

3) Question of religion by birth generally favouring mother

4) Exploitation by intermediaries

Babies born through surrogacy agreements in India are born stateless. This means they are not given Indian citizenship by virtue of the fact they were born in India.  Considering the fact healthcare systems in India are quite economical but system of legislation is slow process, most of the clincs established for ART ( assisted reproductive technology ) are aimed at foreigners it looks like.  There is a series of procedures established for DNA profiling etc which is once again a tedious and expensive process.   Commercial surrogacy has been vogue since 2002 i believe in India.  This has not however converted into legislation so far.  Quick fixes is a concern, ethical issues of who is the actual parent ( anonymous donors ) but contracts are supposed to signed by surrogate and if applicable husbands consent too is required.  No where the cost implications are furnished, so it has to be case to case basis open to manipulation.  Smile
