SEO is good, but what about the contents of your blog?

Content or SEO: which is of prime importance to you when you blog?Personally, I have never given two hoots to SEO. I write for people, not search engines.

Content is the king and SEO is the queen that leads the king to victory in a game of chess. Laughing

The readers. They are helpful in leading you to victory. And your queen (SEO) can kill the pawns of the opponents must faster than the king (content).

It probably depends on what motivates you to blog.  For those who blog with a market/revenue generation in mind the SEO is important.   If you need brand Awareness and increased visibility then it matters.  If your blogging does not cater to a market and is more of a hobby then it should not matter to you.

You have said the truth, Subroto. Yet, even if one is writing for hobby, one is measured on the SEO touchstone too.

I haven't bothered about SEO at all. I get loads of spam from SEO experts who want to teach me how to use SEO. I don't see the value of it for my blog. I write for myself first. The primary purpose of the blog was to teach me how to write.

A small group of regulars comes, reads and seems to enjoy it.  Some people read and comment, many read and don't comment, even more visit and don't read and the bulk of the population doesn't bother at all.

I shall continue to write to satisfy myself first. My take is there are always people willing to write and read yet another vampire and zombie story, just as there are always people who will maybe enjoy my writing style. At least, I have to believe that they do exist!!

The total number of spams braved by my blog is reaching the one million mark —God bless Akismet for the shield— and more than half of that is from 'SEO' experts. No, I am not being smug about people trying to eke out a living  being consultants or whatever. The trouble is, most SEO experts miss quality by miles, unless of course they are talking of SEO. What you have said about yourself and the readers and the passers-by of the blogs is imminently true. You write well, keep it up!

I believe Ajesh your point is quite valid. Over time, we tend to develop a mutual admiration society for the people on whose blogs we are regular and who are regular on our blog. But the question that I think we need to ask ourselves is whether that is adequate enough for us. Apparently it is or you and you have clearly demarcated the boundaries of your investment. But for others it may not be so.

Quite insightful...

It depends on the objective. Mine was not to blog but to use the blog to develop writing skills and find a style that works for me. I admit there was a time not too long ago that I became rather too obsessed with the stats.

I should worry about stats and I do. Why? Stats tell me whether my writing is evoking any response at all or not. Stats tell me whether people are coming out of curiosity or interest. Stats tell me whether they are scanning the Home page and leaving or taking the time to actually read a post.

Ok - I shall stop here and convert this into a blog post. You chaps can all come over and read it there. Why give you a freebie? :Tongue out

The Wordpress "Like" feature, like every other "Like" feature is a stupid feature that offers nothing to the writer and allows the visitor to cop out. You can actually like a post without even visiting it. Plainly, patently stupid. It's the same with the IB 'Promote", though at least IB won't allow you to promote without visiting.

It is and should be possible to write posts that embed keywords that people are likely to search.

@Ajesh Sharma: I'll galdly read the post that you threaten to write although it will certainly not be the first one on the subject.  I wish I could I point you to the excellent treatises on the subject from across the globe but it is too much of a call to my failing memory. Mr Debajyoti Ghosh ( https://www.indiblogger.in/blogger/39286/ ), an old friend currently in hiding for reasons best known to him, was an specialist par excellence on blogger beahaiviour out here on Indiblogger. He wrote many posts on the matter. Further, I agree WordPress' Like can get scammy. For sure, there are those ubiquitions mugs to be found on an amazing number of WordPress blogs, an impossible feat unless you have infrared scanners for eyes. Incidentally, those very mugs are riveted not unlike the Northern Star on the maximum walls of Indiblogger too.  I don't like WordPress' 'Press This' feature either. Other than that, the connectivity they offer has few parallels. As for vampires and jombies, who knows who I am, after all?

+1

Its usually phissing emails.. they try to sell you service, which they will not give Tongue out

Oh yes - I realise that and luckily for me Akismet does a fantastic job of exiling them to a spam folder.

In my book, you should keep both in mind but follow the order in strict discipline !!

Before you begin anything, clear your concept of SEO. There are facts, myths and off course negative black hat tricks (which may land you in trouble). So study well and clear your concept.

Then, when you write a post, follow the following,

  • Write as per the merit of of the post.
  • Content is the king so first make sure you have written a very well researched and hard worked article.. Give you 100% and forget about SEO, just write..

Once you have finished writing then, when you review, now tweak your post as per the need of SEO, as per your understanding !!!

This way, core of the post stays same but you get the chance to add or tweak things as per the need of SEO.

Oh, those colours of the hats! And all I know is Red Hat Linux, that too does not cater to desktop users anymore (it's a Fedora, instead). Once I've written a post, I dare change only the typos. Thanks for the tips!

Your goal is to write.. My goal is to reach out to people to share my idea !!

You may not need SEO and can be happy seating idle while people may or may not find you.. Fine, your blog your rule..

But for people like me, who wants to reach out to readers, its important, that they find me when they look for the information out in wild web !!!

So for me, SEO gets a very high importantance, right after quality of the content..

Very useful tips Hunky. I think I should give it a try. Any suggestions to imbibe that habit of first writing for content and then writing for SEO and/or people?

That's the spirit! By the way, your latest post on Asus was an eye-opener. I had just ordered an expensive Asus router from a seller at Amazon. Unfortunately, there are few quality stores around that stock the entire range of products by a manufacturer.
