Help me Indibloggers in setting up a new website

I am looking to build up a new website.Can you please suggest me what is the best place to buy a domain and what is the difference between hosting it on blogger or on hostgator?

Since blogger allows you to host custom domain  for $10 a year and for hostgator prices are a bit high.
