Indians in Autralia and the hate motivated racial violence

The news of Indian students being attacked in Australia comes as a disgusting shocker! At a time when one expects people to focus on technological improvements, adherence to civil culture and peaceful coexistence, such grim incidents are certainly unbecoming and reflect on the mindset of a social system which is unfortunately harbouring a great deal of racially motivated hate in its thoughts and actions.Least expected are barbarous acts such as the victims' houses being burgled at a time when the entire community is expected to be offering their condolences and help to the distressed lot. Apparently, this hate and racially motivated mindset is leading to many violent attacks on Indians in this Island continent and the Australian government needs to handle this more seriously and with more maturity. While fresh incidents of racial attacks on Indians continue to occur, I call upon the Australian people to standby their Indian counterparts in ensuring peace and harmony, and condemn such uncivilized and heinous acts of violence against any community.Repeated calls for ensuring security of Indian citizens, students in particular, have fallen on deaf ears, as any concrete action remains yet to be taken. It is well past time that the Australian government buckles up and takes some action, while also realizing that an attack on an Indian is an attack on the Indian sovereign!

Yes, Australia was relatively a moderate place for other communities until now! But that has changed, sadly!

There have been cases of racism in the country in the past. Only this time, thanks to our TV channels, we have seen the brutality and violence sitting at home. We are also familiar with the manner in which some of its cricketers behave. I have a post on it - http://shreevenkatram.blogspot.com/2009/05/australian-racism-is-form-of-terrorism.html

This is a great pity and a tragedy.

We should stop sending our children to foreign countries at enormous costs for higher education, and with so much danger. We should build more centres of excellence here.

Satya

I endorse this fully.

Also we should do away this two-tier education (and also health) system in our country - the private schools (and hospitals) for the rich and the powerful and the government schools (and hospitals) for the am aadmi.

If everyone from the prime minister and dhirubahi ambani's sons and daughters to the sons and daughters of the agricultural labourer study in the same school, then the quality of education in our schools will shoot up, so much for the advantage of the nation.

Similarly if every one, from the prime minister and Ratan Tata, down to the poorest beggar in the streets treat themselves in the same hospital, our health system will be the finest in the world.

But we have a long way to go to achieve this. Recently, the prime minster underwent a bypass surgery in a private nursing home, instead of AIIMS, and no one raised any questions.

The following post made me angry.

http://yehhailife.wordpress.com/2009/06/02/its-time-to-protect-indian-students-in-india/

We have so many problems in India, and we are trying to solve them in our own way and may be succeeding and maybe failing.

But does that mean we should keep quiet when there are racist attacks on our people?

Analogy : Health care insurance of the aged is an issue in USA., did that mean they kept quiet about Sept 11?

Just because we have domestic problems in our house, should we allow bullies to beat up our kids outside home?

Our govt and other leaders should protect us even outside our borders!

Otherwise no foreign education, no trade, no globalisation

Everytime they do something wrong, they point fingers at India at our errors and hope to escape their own guilt. This has happened for 400 years at the very least.

Satya

Australia has a long history of racism. In fact from 1901 to 1975, they were openly racial and would allow only whites to emigrate into their country. They even imposed a kind of housing tax on Chinese people, which one can think of as the Jajia tax that the Taliban is levying from the Sikhs in Pakistan. The only difference is the Taliban is discriminating on the basis of religion, the Astralians were discriminating on the basis of race.

Here is a quote from the father of racism in Australia, Alfred Deakin who was their Prime Minister, regarding Chinese and Japanese:

It is not the bad qualities, but the good qualities of these alien races that make them so dangerous to us. It is their inexhaustible energy, their power of applying themselves to new tasks, their endurance and low standard of living that make them such competitors.

We cannot also forget Pauline Hanson, the Australian politician, who in 2007 fought the election on a white Australia plank. She even formed a political party for this. It shows that there is a deep sympathy in the white Australians for such a cause, which was sensed by the astute politician.

The truth is, racism is deeply ingrained in the white Australians, even though they make a sham of being multi-cultural because it suits them. But the wolf hiding within the sheep-skin sometimes becomes visible as in the case of recent incidents. Every cricket match the Australian team plays is marred by one or two racist remarks or gestures.

Another sobering instance of their racism is the way the Australian police cooked up charges on the Indian doctor Muhammad Haneef from Bangalore of being a terrorist and even deported him from Australia. They later had to eat their words.

According to one report in the Times of India, there have been 1,447 incidents of violence against Indians in the last 12 months in Melbourne, which works out to 4 incidents per day.

This by no means is a sporadic case. There could be a calculated move to drive away the Indians from Australia, and if we don't play our cards wisely, we could be having another Uganda on our hands.

Here is a link to an article on this issue that I wrote recently in my blog जयहिंदी.

 आस्ट्रेलिया में नस्लवाद की लंबी परंपरा है

You need to get a lot of the facts right. Yes, Pauline Hanson is racist. But, if the whole nation was racist, as the Indian media is portraying, she would have won her elections. She didn't. And she's tried more than once, mind you.

Coming to the recent spate of attacks on Indians, they have not been committed by just 'white' people. The perpetrators have been of varied backgrounds including Aboriginal, asian, middle-eastern, pacific islander and white. So now, is the Indian media going to say that everyone in the world is racist against Indians?

Yes, there may be a few instances of racism but majority of the crimes highlighted in the media appear to be opportunistic. If you travel by train in an empty carriage, you are putting yourself at risk no matter what your background.

With the whole Sydney issue of Harris Park and Parramatta --- these are Indian hubs. Statistically speaking, when crimes take place in these suburbs, the likely victim is going to be of an Indian background.

By saying that  "every cricket match the Australian team plays is marred by one or two racist remarks or gestures'  is a gross overgeneralisation. And it's overgeneralisation such as this by the media and others sitting in India that has now created all sorts of problems.

Racial descriminations have been around the globe for a very long time now. If you look into it deeply, there is always a minority of people who get into these racial abuse and racial attacks on who they think is from a lesser community.

Australian Govt has to answer the victims of this incident and the world. And at the same time, we all need to stand by our thought and kill racial descrimination completely. Thats how we can completely annihilate the community of people who think they are of superior race. God knows how many legends would it take for these people to understand.
