Women Safety: Is martial arts a male point of view being dominated on women in t

I am Franklin Joseph, a Specialist on Women Safety Empowerment and also a Krav Maga Israeli Self Defense instructor in Bangalore. [http://PowertoWomen.in] [http://FranklinJoseph.in] [http://KravMagaBangalore.in]My question is simple. Martial arts is really good. I am not condeming the art-form. But I feel it's only for some people who are perfect in fitness, flexibility, strength and size. Of course some exceptions might be there. Let's take four instances of crime against women.

  1. 10 years old girl being abused by her step-father
  2. 19 years old girl being molested by a a mob
  3. 34 years old mother being beaten by a drunk husband
  4. 68 years old grand-mother being raped or murdered by her servant

Can martial arts or self defense save them? Male point of view is always fight back, I also agree (I am a male) but is it actually practical for a women of these ages with no martial arts background to fight with bigger and stronger men? After years of being told they are weak suddenly they are told to fight? Does the ascpect of violence, pain, fear and stress of the attack not a part of the problem?

Or they do not fit into the pre-requisit criteria that a martial artist requires?

Please DO NOT MAKE THIS into my martial arts is better than yours etc.

I am just talking from these four women point of view. Let's keep it at that. And imagine these women to be someone you love, so imagine that 10 year old to be your daughter or 34 year old to be your wife in reality as it very easy to advise others when your loved ones are safe. Please avoid the blaming of men or women in this question, we are all matures here, and I want a mature discussion about it.

So what is the altenative assuming the givernment and police are what they are? No point talking about what government can do. Government won't do. Period. And the educated middle class reading this  can't change the givernment, Yeah - some  will yap about middle class having to vote and shit like that. But that will not make any difference. Educated middle class will be like 10-15% of every constituency. So difficult for a candidate to win even one seat with support of just the middle class.

Third alternative is to organize ourselves to protect women and stuff. Which is in essence establishing a parallel government.

All I'll say is that why do we even let the situation come to 'whether women can defend themselves with the help of martial arts or not'. I guess we should tackle such problem at the very beginning - that is the culprit itself.

Learning martial arts is going to boost the confidence of women also make themstrong and willing to fight tooth and nail for what they believe.

In the above mentioned cases, their own people are the culprits. This only means that the enemy is within and we have to cleanse our society inside out.

I would be wrong if I say I have never been afraid of something like this happening to me, my sister, my mother or any of my younger cousins who have to stay with domestic helps sometime or the other. In the same context, had they learnt martial arts, I would be slightly more confident that they can protect themselves.

anything learned never goes waste. it is like loss of will power to learn to defend one self, and be it girl or boy all should have compulsory training of it.

mind gets sharper, and one can act swiftly.

i remember my karate coach from japan, came out of vasu theater in mussoorie, at night in 1979, a hoodlum showed him a knife and asked for his watch.

this man gave his watch , fearing his blow might kill the poor fellow. and he didnot want any cases on him in a foreign land.

so any art learned never goes waste.

now you ask will it save them: I say yes and sure.

The best way for women to protect themselves against violent attacks is to be prepared. There are martial arts classes in every city that can help women learn the necessary skills to prevent and escape dangerous situations. The best way to find the right self defense class for women is to take that first step into a martial arts. Giving martial arts a try could be a live-saving decision.

Nandini, some men have such basic instincts and they cant be stopped from perperating such heinous violation on women. Given such perverts, we'd better think of how could women save themselves from such brutes.

Easwar, all round measures are necessary. police have to be more equipped and fast to act. All girls should have a single button panic device which straight away gives distress message to local police and relatives, and that device should be tracable by gps.

and basic judo classes cumpolsory for all.

I agree with you... This issue is so deep rooted and we can'r have a fresh start, feed all men's mind with the knowledge of proper behavior... what we can do is either kill them or learn to kill them... (not promoting vilonce plz)

I believe a little or a lot in every thing can make a difference. Most of the times men don't expect women to be powerful, so knowledge of self defense may help in most of the cases (I am not saying all cases), and since youth has come out so STRONGLY and ... well not only youth but most of the society, this awakening has helped taking about the usually taboo word "rape" in open (in society) and most of those who used to condemn a victim will be reluctant to do so.

When a girl/woman is dishonored from a family member, Since so many cases are coming out in open it may give victim some confidence to come out and report it and also fight it back. I saw a case in "satyamev jayte" by aamir khan, where a boy was abused by his own father for a long time, one day he SLAPPED his father and that sorry-a** father didnt do it again. His mother stood by the boy. So YES self defence can also help in such cases. and our so-called LAW do not have any clause or punishment for such culprits who abuses their family member (sigh), what a sick law we have!

A little girl can not fight, but a man can be afraid to commit such a crime, for that much stronger non-bailable law (death penalty), acceptance of this sensitive issue in the society, our conscience to help a victim and good upbringing of men is necessary.

If not the complete knowledge of marital arts, complete knowledge of self defense can save a girl.

--I used so many *may* instead of *will* because I was uncertain to a level, No one can even imagine what a victim goes through. Least we could do is not just stand by and be a mute anonymous...

I wrote an article on the same issue (not promoting :) ), because I believe not just martial arts but the complete knowledge of self defense can save may innocent lives.

Can martial arts help to protect a woman. It depends on the context, the real threat she faces.

What martial arts does do is prepare you for conflict. Otherwise just the shock of being attacked can

be immobilising. It is also a mind set. You don't wait for a hero to appear and save you.

There is something called WENDO that they teach in Canada-the way of women. Sometimes the best defence can be running away

or talking your way out of the situation. It can also be in the recognition that you are not powerless or defenceless

Unless a person whether Male or female an expert in martial arts (means years of regular practice ), it is not going to help that person to defend a criminal. You may be learned the necessary steps or actions by a two week empowerment course and performed well in class too but in a real situation you will not be able to use the skill unless you are highly expert. This point is valid for both genders.
