Another Mistake by UPA - Letting Italian Marines to escape!

Political and Diplomatic weakness of UPA government is unmatched in last few years. The UPA is buried in scams, if not than some foot-in-mouth controversy.

We have a Prime Minister who don't speak, if he speaks (with approval from high above) it doesn't have any content. They are projecting a Gandhi, his background and willingness to lead is questionable.

Recently chopper scam came into limelight and the country involved was Italy and "The Family" was the matter of discussion. Later we sent a pair of ItalianMarines home to vote, when they could have used postal ballot facility and now they will not return. Even though the Italian Ambassdor had submitted an affidavit to Supreme Court that they would return. What will UPA Government do now? What will PM Manmohan Singh say? (Will the Italian hand pull the strings on him) What will Supreme Court do?

nop...nothing gandhi did was a sucess  lol...but british did get the message.

Lol, we are not in Gandhian Era to ban Pizza or Clothes, Strong and best way to send the message to Italy is by arresting The Italian Ambassdor, he submitted an affidavite stating those marines would return back to India and face trail. Based on his letter they were sent, he has fooled and he should be punished for it. He should be arrested and bail shouldn't be granted and made to wait for trail to begin the Indian Way.

Gandhi's ideologies were funny he wanted Indians to get educated and become independent thinkers, but he didn't let his own son to the freedom of life and everyone knows what happened to his son because of that.

That's the reason, I am mentioning Supreme Court. It was insulted and it should take action, it has all the rights to do so.

Boycotts have to match the times. If we boycott pizza then which pizza are we talking about; Dominos or Pizza Hut. Both are American companies.

We can boycott Bata shoes or Fiat cars and use economics to fight. After all why do we forget that we are becoming one of the biggest consumer of goods in the world.

As for arresting a ambassador, it does not really hurt where it matters. Economics is the new theatre of war and used effectively it can be a painful lesson.

I agree with you in terms of Pizza.

War on Economic turf is also right.

But, anythig other than arresting the Ambassador is a waste, why are we doing all of the banning and stuff, becasue we were fooled on the basis of Diplomacy. Ambassador has diplomatic immunity, if we arrest him based on his letter to Supreme Court nothing is wrong. America has arrested few ambassador's for not paying parking tickets, why can't Supreme Court act tough in this serious matter.

What will arresting the ambassador achieve? Realistically, nothing. We will spend our taxpayers money in making his stay comfortable.

Also diplomatic immunity is a global agreement that can hurt our interests if we act hastily. Just because other countries have arrested diplomats does not mean we do the same.

Think of the bigger picture. Make less noise and be practical in reducing trade relations with Italy.

We, as consumers can do our part by knowing which brands are Italian and not buying them.

The government may not say it explicitly but most times they do know where to strike to hurt. These decisions are more bureaucracy level than government level.

The idea is to be silent but act.

Ok agreed, think of a similar situation in future but the country is either of america, china, south korea, Arab Countries etc. What would you do, stop using defense equipments, gadgets, cars, petroleum products, etc

govt is ruled by an italian queen...they'll hardly do anything to displease her majesty by cutting off trade with italy her mother nation.....the boycott i was refering to was by the common people to show their  protest .

Except for petroleum products, the rest are all manufacturing or technology related products.

The question to ask is what are we buying from these countries and their economies. If you are implying that we cannot make defense equipments, gadgets or cars then its a fallacy that is created and not real at all. Here I would bring in the idea of Swadeshi because it does not just apply to clothes. Swadeshi applies to technological advancement as well as commercial manufacturing and design functions.

The government and the ministries creat problems in many cases but left to compete, we have many firms that can fulfill most of these needs.

@Nandini, those sanctions were an eyewash. Most of the countries placed sanctions on products that they were anyways not selling to India. They kept the door open for products made in India that they wanted.

The news media makes it a big deal but realistically trade with US was not affected by a large margin because the existing trade then with US had little to do with nuclear material. A more serious hit would have been when US says no dollar payments to India like in the case of US-Iran relations or US-North Korea relations where if you as an Indian want to buy something, you cannot route US dollars or use any American banks for payments to Iran or North Korea. That kind of sanction they could not afford because they had their own economic interests to look at.

@Nandini, India last tested nuclear device in the year 1998 and trade between india and America didn't reduce, it continued or rather it flurished.

@Sriram, everything is inter-related, how many swadeshi brands do we have in the "manufacturing or technology related products" which are a necessity as of now. Are we ready for a situation where we aren't dependent on other countries?

No point harrassing the ambassador. Instead we should throw him out and completely cut relations with Italy and put an embargo on them.

I dont think being emotive about the issue is going to help. We need to play it smart. We have done it before wth Germans and we can use the same bag of tricks here too.

True, th government will not do anything but the bureaucracy that the government depends on can. Bureaucracy works in weird ways and if you look closely they do what is needed without too much noise. The news media will not tell you this even if they know about it because they want you to watch the news for long hours.

If the news media states the truth and broadcasts it, most people will shut down the television and not watch news at all.

Do I actually see people debating Pizza Boycott?

Which one will people boycott?

Pizza Hut? Or Dominos?:

Both are american companies and actually employ 1000s of indian youth.

It is like saying if Italy wants to pass on a message to India they will refuse to do Yoga or stop eating curry or dosa or parantha...will we get the message? No, we will just have a good laugh .

So our Italian uncles are coming back home after all? Hope the courts quickly decide something either way without simply wasting years together at least now.
