What exactly is Haiku Heights

Vijay Prabhu

I see a lot of blogs now a days posting 3 liners or 4 liners (which are often great) but the end of the para says Haiku Heights

What exactly is meaning of that and what is purpose of that.  Are they similar to the Hindi Doha or Marathi Charoli?

Visit the haiku heights website and you will know. Every day they give a topic. You can write a haiku, post it on your blog and submit the link at haiku heights. Just like IndiVine. Tongue out

Haiku is a Japanese form of poetry. A short poem not consisting more than 17 syllables. But today's haiku are more liberal with that. Haiku heights is a site where they put up prompts weekly for haiku. Anyone interested writes on the given topic(prompt) and links back to the website.

Vijay - The basic thing to understand in a Haiku apart from the 17 syllables is the 'turn'. You must give a contrast in the end. Many writes today would write the haiku as a statement, which does not serve the purpose.

If I may, here is what I could write on the subject of rain for you.. in 5,7,5 structure.

O! new leafs in rain!

glittering with raindrops and dew;

will you feed insects?

now how does this be a 5 7 5 Haiku?

Nandini Deka
from Bombay

actually the middle line seems 8 syllable

Fairy Princess
from Delhi

O! new leafs in rain!= Each word has one syllable. Hence 5 syllable

glittering with raindrops and dew;= Glittering has 3 syllable and raindrops has 2. Hence, 3+1+2+1+1=8

will you feed insects?= Insects has 2 syllabus. So it would be 5

So, I guess, this one is 5-8-5

Though true haiku stick to the 5-7-5 pattern, English haiku often circumvent this rule. So the main thing is: three lines, 17 syllables at the max.

Once you get the hang of it, they're really fun to write!

@Razi Ayyo, vendaaa! I express myself better in English than in Malayalam when it comes to written work. And I don't know the concept of syllables in Mal. Here's one of mine in English, though :)
