Every week i receive mails from friends and unknown friends to exchange the link ?

As i have never exchanged link with anyone , and i always feel difficult to say no to friends .

I wanted to ask what is the importance of link exchange ?

what is the best way to do link exchange and how to do this ?

Does link exchange really helps to bring traffic ?

Hey these are the guidelines released by Google(webmaster tool)

i hv posted the same here.

Quality guidelines - basic principles

  • Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines. Don't deceive your users or present different content to search engines than you display to users, which is commonly referred to as "cloaking."
  • Avoid tricks intended to improve search engine rankings. A good rule of thumb is whether you'd feel comfortable explaining what you've done to a website that competes with you. Another useful test is to ask, "Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn't exist?"
  • Don't participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web, as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links.
  • Don't use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our Terms of Service. Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google.

if you have similiar audience it's always good to do link exchange...

someone of the plus points are

you get more exposure

more publicity

better SERP

bad thing about link exchange.. if you having a bad neighbor, you got the chances of blacklist by google as link farm

Try deep linking instead of blind link exchanges. The idea should be to boost internal page ranks thereby making the home PR better. Your typical search visits should be to your content pages and not necessarily to the homepage.

ajith thanks

yes this looks interesting  i visited your site its good site,

deep linking means are you saying putting  html code inside a particular blogpost, if yes

or no , please write  a post explaining step by step how to do this .

thanks .

@sm,

I have already written a blog post explaining what is deep linking. Please read it... basically it's a link from an internal page/post of a blog to an internal page/post of another blog/site (instead of linking it to the homepage like blog rolls)

Exchanging links do helps in pageranks..

But if these links are carfully exchanged, they could lead to huge traffics.

So, go for link exchange, but take care about the destination of link. Also links in posts are more valuable than in sidebar or blog roll..!!
