Why do have to register @ gravatar.com just to upload my pic?
I have never come across another website where to upload my profile pic I need to register at another website.
Is there a way around it?

Majority of the blogs use Gravatar as the universal profile picture based service. So go to Gravatar.com upload pic, verify email and comment on blogs to get your picture displayed.
