The govt. of India had opted for promoting family planning (later this program was renamed as family welfare program) pretty early after the independence. However Hindi cinema had come up with certain movies which were quite contrary to the intent … Continue reading →.....

Can a society or the state itself become a prison for the citizens? If we look at current Indian political scenario, the answer is too obvious. Here people can be arrested or at least accused of treason for merely questioning the government. Your very citizenship can become suspect. In fact, just anything can happen to you once you become a target of your government. Two recent examples are R Rajagopal of The Telegraph who is a staunch critic of Modi and Priyank Kharge who questione.....

Karm (1977) is a film made by B.R. Films and directed B.R. Chopra. I have termed it as different. It is different because it deals with a novel theme. And it’s different from the other films of this banner and … Continue reading →.....

I was always under the impression, from what I had learned in my history lessons in secondary school, that Shakespeare moved among the aristocrats and mesmerised them with comedies, tragedies and historical gems that stood the test of time. For the longest time, the world wondered whether the composer of the greatest English stories, plays, and dialogues of various genres was really a commoner from Stratford-upon-Avon. It must have taken a person.....

Tenderness is what makes life bearable in spite of all that. Mahadevan is a personification of that tenderness. Tenderness is often seen as a weakness in today’s world that admires ‘strength.’ This movie shows us that tenderness is the real strength: strength stripped of aggression. It is the courage to touch another life without possessing it, to comfort without judging, to understand without demanding explanations...

Just the other day, I wished my varsity mate a happy 63rd birthday. My friend, who had enjoyed his singledom for almost his entire life, told me he was on a break. He was perched on a hill near our old varsity, just gazing into the horizon. With no offspring carrying his name, but a fulfilling close to 40 years of a successful career as a health provider, he just wanted to reflect and take stock...

The phrase 'throwing a Hail Mary' originated from American football to signify a desperate attempt to throw the ball forward, hoping against hope to score in a last-minute effort when it appears nearly impossible to do anything else. The word slowly came to be used in everyday conversation to signify the same thing: a risky last-minute effort to fix something...

If anyone says he does not feel happy after being complimented on his work, he is probably not telling the truth. It is human nature to feel warm, good feelings inside when you take baby steps, and your mother jumps with joy when you come home with a medal after a race or when you ace a public examination with flying colours...

Things that come to mind after watching this movie, which is the continuation of its first part, are whether it is a work of fiction, a propaganda film, or based on true events. Too many things, too fast, all centred on a group of people linked to and residing in Pakistan, seems preposterous. Ask the Indian journalists and political leaders, and they will swear that everything mentioned in the film actually took place and that India has all the proof to prove it...

Maybe all of this dates back to when the Monroe Doctrine was introduced in 1823. It firmly instructed European powers to stay out of the Western Hemisphere and to define a 'sphere of influence' in Latin America. In exchange, the United States would not interfere in European affairs. As the US expanded westward, acquiring California from Mexico, it grew more confident...

If the people from the Tullu region could come up with Kanthara and Kerala had Theyyam worship, the Tamils thought they could show off their own Karuppu Samy. Karuppu Samy belongs to a pantheon of local deities which forms the Dravidian folk religions. Their practices are said to predate Vedic teachings. Unlike the Vedic scriptures, which were written in Sanskrit, the Dravidian folk practices were transmitted orally and performed by families and villagers in the locality...

There was a particular book in our school library that was hot merchandise every hot-blooded teenage boy (and girls in Form 6) wanted their hands on: Jacqueline Susann's debutante writing, 'Valley of Dolls'. The demand was so high that it was eventually placed in the red-spot book section. One would have thought that would allow more depraved teenagers to indulge in the pleasure of reading this fiction, but no...

This movie reminds me of one of Quentin Tarantino's high-octane films, so fast-paced that it keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. It could also be like a production of escapades in a banana republic, in which American 'do-gooders' are trying to restore normality...

If you are one of those who follow Erich von Däniken's 'Ancient Aliens', you may have heard that aliens are prime movers in human civilisation. It was probably around the time when Neanderthals were roaming the Earth together with proto-homo sapiens. Arunakki was an alien king who came to Earth in search of gold, a commodity much in demand on his planet, Nibiru...
